Thomas Nast was employed by Harper's Weekly. He created the image of Santa and the notion that he lived in the North Pole and had elves.Nast was very instrumental in forming the basis for political cartoons. He made the symbols for the political parties;the Republican's elephant and the Democrat's donkey. Nast even imagined the character of Uncle Sam.
His support for Hayes in 1876 election lead Rutherford Hayes to the winner's circle. Nast cornered against Greeley in the 1872 election and assisted in Grant's presidential win thanks to his artistry. Every presidential candidate Nast portrayed in a positive light was sitting in the White House sooner than later. Nast helped the national government create reforms to end corruption in politics especially in New York.
Thomas nast was very different from Riis. Riis was on the side of the immigrants and the poor while Nast thought the immigrants and the Catholic Church were the enemy because of their dealings with William Tweed. Thomas Nast's persistence with his politcal cartoons that were aimed at the Tweed Ring eventually led to the arrest of Boss Tweed in 1873. William Tweed was convicted of fraud. Nast was obviously a risk taker so it is not surprising that he was an abolitionist also. Lincoln and most other abolitionists had the strong and useful support of Thomas Nast.
